Beautiful winners: La street art tra underground, arte e mercato

Author(s): Marco Tomassini
Date: 2012
Description:
In the common sense, the street art label evokes an indefinite, obscure and heterogeneous underground universe, in which avant-garde events coexist, explicitly counter-cultural expressions and forms of urban creativity of subcultural origin, first of all graffiti writing. However, especially in the last decade, several of its protagonists have come into contact with the official circuits of cultural production, attempting the road of art or the market with the ambition of making a passion developed in a disinterested way a continuous occupation and remunerated. Taking this scenario into account, the volume aims to reconstruct the factors that, at a social and cultural level, have favored the emergence of street art in the last three decades, while investigating its current material, relational and power configurations. All through the intersection of different theoretical perspectives, coming from the sociology of art, mediology and urban sociology, and the triangulation of multiple empirical materials (such as participant observations and in-depth interviews), the result of extensive research work on field.
